KUALA LANGAT: More people from the low income group will be able to own homes once the Government increases the subsidy for the 1Malaysia People Friendly Home (RMR1M) project which is being spearheaded by Syarikat Perumahan Nasional Bhd (SPNB).
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the Government would be increasing the subsidies given the scheme’s popularity and the high demand from low income families that want to own homes.
Najib said the RMR1M was a concept which greatly benefited recipients.
“So far, since the programme was first launched in 2002, about 36,000 units have been built,” Najib told a press conference after launching 10,000 units of these house here yesterday.
Najib also handed qualifying certificates to some of the subsidy recipients at the event.
“The scheme is very popular and so we have launched 10,000 units of the 1Malaysia People Friendly Home today and next year there will be another 5,000 units which I had announced in Budget 2017,” said Najib.
He said he had also told SPNB chairman Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad that the Government was willing to increase the number of units built due to the scheme’s popularity and the high number of applications.
“The only condition is that they must have their own land,” he said.
Najib said it would take between 18 and 24 months for an application to be processed, but if the Government had the means, the number of subsidies offered would be increased to cut short the waiting time.
Najib said that under the project recipients would get a subsidy of RM20,000 as well as a financing subsidy of RM11,000.
“For every house valued at RM65,000, they will receive a subsidy of RM31,000. The scheme’s repayment is also not burdensome,” he added.
Najib said the recipients were initially servicing their loans with a payment of RM150 a month but the amount had been increased to RM230 since the scheme went through an adjustment in 2015.
The recipients will fully own their houses after their repayment period of 25 years is concluded.
The Prime Minister said the scheme also benefited other parties such as Class F bumiputra contractors, building material and furnishing suppliers and lawyers.
“We have about 3,000 Class F contractors who are experts in the field and can build the houses well and in quick time,” he added.
Earlier in the day, Najib visited the homes of two recipients whose houses had been completed in Kampung Bukit Chaggang.
Also present were Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar, Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid and Dr Abdul Latiff.
