PETALING JAYA: Eupe Corporation Bhd (Eupe) has expanded its mangrove conservation partnership with Treat Every Environment Special (TrEES), Selangor State Forestry Department and Kampung Orang Asli Kepau Laut (KOA Kepau Laut), mobilising over 150 volunteers to plant an additional 1,250 saplings to rehabilitate and expand the declining mangrove forest in Carey Island.
According to Eupe, the group have mobilised staff, family members, students and partners from Engineers Without Borders Malaysia (EWBM), University of Nottingham Malaysia, Feruni Ceramiche, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and UCSI University, together with the District Forest Office Pantai Klang and KOA Kepau Lau in creating a model of collective environmental stewardship.
"Environmental conservation isn't a one-company job - it requires action from all of us," said Eupe corporate communications manager Daniel Sim.
The project involves planting multiple mangrove species, including Rhizophora apiculata (Bakau minyak), to stabilise shorelines, and Nipa palms that aid in sediment retention. EUPE said the species establish a biodiverse environment and support a sustainable livelihood for the Carey Island Orang Asli communities. Planting the Nipa palms sustains local weaving crafts while preserving their traditional uses for roof thatching and food.
“This long-term initiative requires sustained effort to achieve meaningful change. Eupe’s continued commitment and support as a funding partner has been invaluable. The dedicated work of Kampung Orang Asli Kepau Laut members between planting sessions is central to achieving lasting benefits for both the ecosystem and the community,” said TrEES director Leela Panikkar.
According to Eupe, the company is committed to continuing this partnership with TrEES through 2027 and beyond, supporting efforts to potentially expand mangrove rehabilitation along additional stretches of Carey Island’s coastline.
