KUALA LUMPUR: Berjaya Land Bhd has announced its expansion into Greenland through its wholly owned subsidiary, Berjaya Greenland Invest A/S, marking a journey rooted in responsible growth, innovation and a deep respect for the local community and environment.

Committed to creating a vibrant and welcoming destination, Berjaya Land recognises Greenland as a land rich in potential and ready for new opportunities. Through strategic engagement with the Municipality of Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, Berjaya Land identified a growing housing shortage as a key community concern.

In response, Berjaya Greenland Invest A/S has secured land in Nuuk with the aim of delivering high-quality residential apartments tailored to Greenland’s unique climate and infrastructure needs.

Berjaya Land group chief executive officer (CEO) Syed Ali Shahul Hameed said: "We are excited to move forward with this collaboration, which marks a key milestone in our efforts to deliver modern, practical housing solutions that meet real community needs. This project reflects Berjaya Land's broader vision of creating high-quality developments that are efficient, adaptable and built with long-term impact in mind. Modular construction offers a smart and timely approach, allowing us to deliver faster and cost-effective homes while supporting local capacity-building. Our focus remains on developing spaces that not only serve today's needs but also lay the groundwork for resilient, connected communities in the years ahead."

In a significant step forward, Berjaya Land signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with SIBS Sdn Bhd (SIBS)—a Sweden-based company and global leader in modular housing systems with a manufacturing facility in Penang. This partnership aims to provide efficient, climate-resilient homes using modular construction—a modern approach that enables faster deployment, cost efficiency and lasting quality.

Modular housing is particularly suited to Greenland’s environment, offering key advantages such as:

  • Superior quality control through off-site, factory-controlled construction
  • Enhanced energy efficiency with insulation suited for Arctic climates
  • Reduced construction time, as site work and modular assembly occur in parallel
  • Environmental sustainability via reduced waste and optimised resources
  • Design flexibility to accommodate local housing preferences

The housing initiative is currently in the planning and design phase, with a launch expected soon. Beyond improving housing access, the project is expected to generate significant economic benefits, including job creation, opportunities for local contractors and long-term urban growth.

Building on this progress, Berjaya Land is also collaborating with the Municipality of Nuuk to explore the next phase of development—potentially including a hotel and hotel residences to support Greenland’s growing tourism sector. With the opening of the new international airport in November 2024, Nuuk is poised to become a key destination in the Arctic region. Berjaya Land’s proposed hospitality investment is designed to meet this demand while upholding strong commitments to cultural preservation and environmental sustainability.

SIB group CEO Erik Thomaeus added: "We are honoured to join hands with Berjaya Land in this strategic partnership that aligns perfectly with our vision of shaping the future of sustainable modern living. Their commitment to community-driven development and respect for local identity resonate deeply with our values at SIBS. At the core of our collaboration is a shared belief that innovation and sustainability must go hand in hand. Together, we aim to deliver modular housing solutions that are not only high in quality and efficiency but also adaptable to the unique needs of the people and places they serve."
