PETALING JAYA: Sunway City Iskandar Puteri (SCIP) announced that it has broken ground for the second phase expansion of SJK (C) Cheah Fah, a Chinese national-type primary school located in SCIP township.
The expansion will add 12 classrooms, raising total capacity to 1,500 students and expand the canteen to seat the full student body at once. The design anticipates future policy shifts, including the government’s move to allow six-year-olds into Standard One.
“As Sunway City Iskandar Puteri matures into a family-oriented township, access to quality education becomes fundamental,” said SCIP chief executive officer Gerard Soosay.
Opened in 2022 with RM18mil from Sunway and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, SJK (C) Cheah Fah was the first of 10 Chinese national-type schools approved under the Johor state government’s allocation. Enrollment has surged to more than 820 students in under four years, pushing facilities close to their 1,000-pupil capacity.
According to Sunway Group, it has invested RM23mil in the school to date, including RM5mil pledged after a 2025 fundraising dinner that drew RM1mil from more than 900 donors. It is one of eight schools nationwide adopted by Sunway and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, an education-focused social enterprise.
The expansion also reinforces SCIP’s positioning as a family-focused, education-led township — and highlights Sunway’s belief that investing in national-type education is as integral to its vision as township development itself.
