KUALA LUMPUR: Chester Group and PT Synergy Tharada have officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to launch a landmark mixed-use development on Batam Island, Indonesia. The project will be constructed by China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), a Fortune Global 500 company ranked 63rd globally.
The signing ceremony began with a ribbon-cutting event attended by a distinguished lineup of VVIP guests, including Sujasu Ltd managing director Jonathan Tan, PT Synergy Tharada founder Moch Sonny Inayatkhan, Chester Group executive chairman Datuk Howard Chew, Black Card Platform chief executive officer (CEO) Jei Chew, CCCC chairman and CEO Morgan Chen and Sun from CCCC, along with other dignitaries Bara Inv Holdings Sdn Bhd CEO Datuk Seri Mohd Raza Khan, WDS architect Pak Syarif, Datin Chervonne Lee, PT Synergy Tharada CEO Moch Reza S Riyadi and Tan Sri Bakri.
The MoU was formally signed following the ceremony. Chew signed on behalf of Chester Group and was witnessed by Tan. Moch Sonny signed for PT Synergy Tharada and was witnessed by CCCC Dredging Southeast Asia Sdn Bhd chairman Chen Yangui.
Chester Group underscored its commitment to the project by pledging an initial direct investment of RM100mil. This collaboration marks the beginning of a transformative development that aims to position Batam as the next Singapore of Indonesia, a vision echoed by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto Djojohadikusumo.
The project, titled New Batam Centre (NBC), will be Indonesia’s first large-scale land reclamation and integrated development of its kind. It will encompass commercial, residential and mixed-use components designed to support Batam’s burgeoning economy and stimulate long-term regional growth. Strategically located just 45 minutes by ferry from Singapore, NBC is poised to become a major new economic hub in Southeast Asia.
NBC will be developed in phases, with Phase One carrying a Gross Development Value (GDV) of USD750mil (RM3.19bil). The total GDV for the project is projected at USD17 bil (RM72.45bil).
“This is more than an investment — it’s a bold statement of our long-term vision for Batam,” said Chew. “Together with PT Synergy Tharada and CCCC, we’re creating an exceptional destination that combines economic impact, urban vitality, and generational value.”
