PENANG: Eastern and Oriental Bhd (E&O) has been officially recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) as the Widest Box Girder Bridge in Malaysia, achieved by the Gurney Bridge at Andaman Island.

The recognition was presented by MBOR chief executive officer Christopher Wong to E&O managing director Kok Tuck Cheong in conjunction with the completion of The Meg last Thursday, marking a significant milestone for E&O as it continues to shape the future of Penang’s northern coastline through integrated township development. The occasion was witnessed by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and E&O executive chairman Datuk Seri Tee Eng Ho.

Spanning 450m in length across the sea and 40m in width, the Gurney Bridge represents a new national benchmark in infrastructure design and engineering. Featuring eight vehicular lanes and dedicated 4m-wide pedestrian walkways on either side, the bridge is more than a transport link — it serves as a lifestyle connector that enhances accessibility across the township, supporting economic vibrancy and fostering a more connected way of life for the Andaman Island community.

Strategically linking Andaman Island to Gurney Drive, the bridge enhances regional connectivity, improves traffic flow distribution, reduces travel time and provides an alternative access route along Penang’s northern seafront. Its integration into the broader road network supports smoother circulation to surrounding areas, including Tanjung Tokong and the greater Gurney precinct.

Beyond its primary role in connecting the Gurney precinct to Andaman Island and enhancing accessibility, Gurney Bridge has been designed as a signature waterfront landmark, contributing to Penang’s evolving coastal identity. With sweeping views of the sea and skyline, it also supports a more walkable and connected urban environment, in line with E&O’s vision for a holistic and liveable township.

“Andaman Island is envisioned as a next-generation township that enhances the way people live, work and connect,” said Chow.

Kok added: “This recognition by the Malaysia Book of Records is a meaningful milestone for us. Gurney Bridge is more than just a connection point, it is a key enabler of Andaman Island’s vision as a fully integrated, future-ready township. The bridge not only enhances accessibility and connectivity but also plays an important role in shaping a vibrant waterfront environment that supports community, mobility and long-term growth.”

As part of its long-term vision, E&O continues to advance its 30-year masterplan for Andaman Island, where infrastructure and placemaking are developed in tandem. The successful completion and recognition of Gurney Bridge underscore the group’s commitment to delivering developments that contribute meaningfully to both the urban landscape and the broader community.
