ALTHOUGH the tidal wave peaked at 5.7m yesterday, low-lying areas in Klang town and Port Klang were not affected by floods due to absence of heavy rain and bunds placed along Sungai Kelang.
Low-lying areas in Klang that were put on alert were Taman Melawis and neighbourhoods around Jalan Tepi Sungai, while in Port Klang, areas at risk were Pandamaran, Taman Selat Damai, Kampung Sungai Lima and Pulau Ketam.
Klang Zone Fire and Rescue Department officer-in-charge Amir Haizal Sahak said water level in Sungai Kelang had peaked due to the high tide recorded at 5.7m at about 6.35am.
“Even the town area along Jalan Pasar that is closer to Sungai Kelang was fine.
Amir Haizal, however, advised residents to continue to be vigilant as the tide was forecast to reach the highest for one more day tomorrow.
“Our men are still on alert mode as the force of the water current is a danger,” he said.
Department personnel were seen checking the area at about 5.10am along Jalan Emas, Jalan Melawis and Jalan Tepi Sungai. Flood warnings are still in place for high-risk areas.
Amir Haizal also hoped the weather condition would be good this week.
“All things are going well and we hope we can restore normality to the town,” he said.
A check at Taman Melawis, Water Gate 38 in Jalan Tepi Sungai and KTM station Port Klang at 7am yesterday found water level at moderate height with no backflow into drains.
Personnel from the Civil Defence Department, Klang South police headquarters and the Klang District Office were also on their rounds.
Amir Haizal said the high river water level began receding at 8am.
