SEREMBAN: Chinese battery materials giant Hunan Yuneng New Energy Battery Material Co Ltd is set to establish a lithium battery cathode manufacturing facility in Senawang, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Invest Negeri Sembilan (Invest NS).
The MoU, exchanged in a ceremony held at Royale Chulan Seremban, marks a significant milestone in boosting foreign direct investment in Malaysia’s clean energy sector. Alongside the MoU, Hunan Yuneng also presented a Letter of Intent to SPD Tech Valley Sdn Bhd, outlining its plan to locate its facility within the SPD Tech Valley industrial park in Senawang.
Negeri Sembilan Chief Minister Datuk Seri Utama Aminuddin Harun witnessed the event. Hunan Yuneng was represented by deputy chief operating officer Liang Kai while Invest NS chief operating officer Datuk Najmuddin Sharif Sarimon signed on behalf of the state. Seri Pajam Development Group chief executive officer Ten Wee Seong received the Letter of Intent.
Also present at the signing ceremony were Negeri Sembilan state secretary Datuk Mohd Zafir Ibrahim, Negeri Sembilan industrialisation and non-Muslim affairs committee chairman Teo Kok Seong, Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) manufacturing development executive director Suraya Susah, Hunan Yuneng Group deputy chief operating officer Zhou Zhihui and investment director Ma Guodong and Seri Pajam Development Group executive chairman Datuk Teh Ah Man.
Hunan Yuneng, the world’s largest producer of lithium iron phosphate materials, is responsible for 30% of global supply and will invest RM560mil into the development of the plant. The facility, to be constructed in Phase 1 of SPD Tech Valley, will primarily produce lithium battery cathode materials, with an annual production capacity of 90,000 tons. Construction is slated for completion in 15 months and is expected to generate over 200 new jobs.
“This project is a clear manifestation of the aspirations of Malaysia Vision Valley 2.0, which aims to strengthen Negeri Sembilan’s role as a regional hub for innovation and technology,” said Aminuddin.
The partnership is more than a financial commitment and it signals a joint effort to foster a sustainable, environmental, social and governance (ESG)-focused industrial ecosystem. SPD Tech Valley, the project’s site, is Southeast Asia’s first LEED Gold-certified industrial city, aligning with national frameworks such as the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030.
“SPD Tech Valley is more than an industrial park — it is a purpose-built ecosystem for the future,” said Ten. “This collaboration marks not just a financial milestone, but a vote of confidence in Malaysia’s capabilities and Negeri Sembilan’s industrial vision.”
Meanwhile, Liang added that today’s signing marks not only a significant milestone in Hunan Yuneng Group’s international expansion strategy but also the beginning of a joint effort to build a new engine for green economic growth in the region.
