Tapping into Penang market

A GROUP of 42 members from the Malaysian Chamber of Commerce — Hong Kong and Macau (MayCham) enjoyed a sumptuous feast that included local fare such as laksa and Hokkien mee.

The visitors were in town on a four-day trip to explore business opportunities by visiting, among others, government agencies and garment factories as part of their ‘Penang Factory and Heritage Tour’.

MayCham chairman Gan Khai Choon said the state’s proposed LRT project had also drawn their attention.

“The LRT project is very much an infrastructure-driven project and we aretrying to find out the areas our members and friends can take part in infrastructure development and its related facilities in Penang.

“With the Ringgit lower against the USD, the opportunity of working and investingin Malaysia is even more advantageous because of the lower cost in terms of exchange rate.

“Hong Kong and China businessmen are versatile people. We are hoping there will be opportunities in all types of businesses be it in infrastructure, IT, real estate, hospitality, and so forth with Penang being a forward- looking part of the Malaysian economy,” he said when met during a dinner hosted by Hunza Properties Group in Gurney Paragon on Saturday.

Hunza Group executive director Khor Tze Ming said the dinner provided a platformfor the visitors and the industry players to share information, and to learn from each other.

“Businessmen in Hong Kong and Macau are touted as one of the best industry players in the world with great vision and calibre. Their work efficiency and industry knowledge is second to none,” she said.

MayCham is made up of Malaysian businessmen in Hong Kong as well as Hong Kong companies with links to Malaysia.
