JOHOR BARU: The state government has allocated RM900,000 to strengthen the role of the Neighbourhood Watch Group (KRT) and Voluntary Patrolling Scheme (SRS) statewide, this year.

Mentri Besar Datuk Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the allocation would be utilised to purchase patrolling equipments and conduct safety programmes to be carried out by the two bodies.

“Their functions and role should be promoted through innovative and creative campaigns to attract more members of the public to come forward and join them as volunteers.

“I hope more units can be formed in most parts of Johor to ensure the peace and harmony of the community,” he said at the breaking fast with SRS patrolling chiefs statewide at New York Hotel here.

Mohamed Khaled said that KRT and SRS also played a key role in fostering better relationship and cooperation between residents in each area.

“Our citizens have to realise that crime prevention is not the sole responsibility of law enforcement agencies but it is everybody’s responsibility.

“The formation of SRS is very much relevant and instrumental in creating a safe environment for the community,” he added.

Meanwhile, Johor Unity and Human Resource committee chairman R Vidyanathan said that some 11,280 memberships had been recorded in 564 SRS’ statewide to date.

“We are committed to increase the numbers in each of the areas, and hope to set up more SRS statewide,” he added.
