Kampung Dato is a freehold village located in the western bank of Sibu, Sarawak. It was one of the earliest Malay town settlements in Sibu. The majority of houses here are single storey detached houses, characteristic of a true "kampung". The roads are paved but would sometimes have undulations.Paramount Hotel is located along the street and is indeed one of the landmarks of the location. As it is the only hotel in the vicinity, it does have the tendency to be fully booked during peak season. It is a three-star rated hotel with excellent service. Peak season would likely drive some traffic into the town promoting economic activity.Apart from the hotel, around the area is also a commercial area where banks, restaurants and food stalls could be found. There is also some night-life entertainment outlets in the area, including KTV karaoke and clubs. Throughout the streets there are stalls set up, which are run by families selling various foods such as kebabs, burgers, "kuihs" which are local dessert type cakes, and drinks. The nearest malls from Kampung Dato is the Median Mall and the SenQ Delta Mall located approximately 2 kilometers away. Banking hubs, eateries and mini markets are available right at the location's doorstep as the the commercial area is less than 1 kilometers away and easily accessible on foot. The closest hospital is the Sibu Hospital approximately 8 kilometers away. From Kampung Dato, there are many schools in the vicinity including SMK Methodist, Catholic High School, Nanyang Institute of Commerce, Tung Hua Secondary School, and SMK St. Elizabeth. The location is very accessible as it skirts the western coast of Sibu, with Jalan Kampung Dato and Jalan Awang Ramli Amit being the main roads.

  • Analysis

The location of Kampung Dato is truly off the beaten path, but one would be able to experience true Malay culture in this part of Sibu as the area is predominantly populated by the Malays. During the festive season (Hari Raya), a visit here would be highly educational as the culture would be on exhibit in true Sarawakian fashion.Kampung Dato was partially razed when a fire in June 2013 wiped out almost 100 houses in the massive inferno. It was the worst fire to have ravaged the state in recent years. An estimated 650 persons from 100 different families were victims to this fire which was incidentally fanned by strong winds.
