The month of May seems to be an exciting one for the art world. Or at least, that is the case for Kuala Lumpur. The city sees three big art exhibitions at three different art galleries – Valentine Willie art gallery, Wei Ling Gallery and Gallery Taksu.

Beyond Reality @ Valentine Willie art gallery
Opening the month-long art festival is Bangsar-based gallery, Valentine Willie. The gallery presents Beyond Reality, a solo exhibition by Indonesian-based Greek artist, TANO. The exhibition showcases a series of paintings that highlights the artist’s versatility in working with various art techniques. TANO, who completed his study on Batik at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, employed traditional Batik technique and European charcoal drawing in his featured works.

Beyond Reality draws inspiration from the artist’s interest in the outer realities beyond physical reach. Toying with the idea of quantum mechanics, astrophysics and Shamanism, the artistic impression of his work is both beautiful and eerie.

Bold strokes of spirals, rotations and chaotic movements are put together in both macro and micro volume, resultin g in forceful parallel dimensions that are self-reflexive. The complexity of technique and philosophical meaning behind the works are expressed in basic colours such as red, black, grey and beige, giving the collection a contemporary packaging.

Beyond Reality will be on exhibition from April 28 to May 22.

Contemporary Czech Glass @ Wei Ling Gallery
Wei Ling Gallery, together with StudioGlass London, is set to raise the bar of the Kuala Lumpur art scene by showcasing the works of Czech artists. This is the first exhibition ever held in Malaysia that is solely dedicated to Czech artists – Ivana Houserova, Ales Vasicek and Jirí Šín.

Czech’s tradition in creating mural, glass and crystal works has been recognised since the Middle Ages. The famous Bohemian crystal originated from that country. In the spirit of preserving this heritage, several modern artists from Czech revisited the art of crystal making.

With a strong technical understanding of sculptural and graphic expression, Houserova, Vasicek and Šín impose their modern interpretation to Czech’s traditional crystal art technique. The result is an innovative, sleek and contemporary collection that maintains the unrivalled craftsmanship of the Czech crystal.

Contemporary Czech Glass will be exhibited from May 12 to May 28.

Combines! - A Tribute to Rauschenberg @ Gallery Taksu
Gallery Taksu, known for its selection of contemporary arts, will be showcasing works of various local artists who are inspired by Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008). Rauschenberg is an iconic American artist who is known for his ground-breaking and edgy art works in both painting and sculpture, which came to prominence during the 1950s transition from Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art.

21 local and international artists will be taking part in this exhibition, namely Mansor Ali, Noberto Roldan, Haslin Ismail, Nazlishah Mohd Yahya and Mohd Azrin.

Rauschenberg has been infamously quoted as saying, “A pair of socks is no less suitable to make a painting with than wood, nails, turpentine, old and fabric. A canvas is never empty.” With the same innovative spirit, one could hope for a non-traditional exhibition that pushes the boundaries.

Combines! Tribute to Rauschenberg will be exhibited from May 15 to May 29.
