MPSJ rewards exemplary workers

MAZRUL Zahar Mohd’s job as a Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) enforcement member requires dealing with those who flout the law.

It comes with a certain degree of danger but this is exactly what gets his adrenaline flowing.

“I love the challenge and I am not afraid of the danger as we are trained to handle any situation,” the 34-year-old said.

Mazrul has been with the MPSJ for about 11 years and his most dangerous assignment was in 2004.

“It was the Operasi Helang to tear down the illegal squatters in USJ 1 and the hand grenade thrown at us by the Indonesians exploded.

“Such incidents prompted me to be even more dedicated to my work, as a service for the community,” the assistant enforcement officer said.

Mazrul, who had always wanted to be a man-in-uniform, said he wears his uniform and badge with pride.

He was among the 102 MPSJ employees who received the Excellence Service Award 2009 recently in a ceremony held at the Grand Dorsett Hotel in Subang Jaya.

For licensing director Ismail Salim, this was his third Excellence Service Award since he joined the council in 1992.

Previously working in the General Administration, Training and Human Resource departments, the 42-year-old said the general perception of government employment as a nine-to-five job is inaccurate.

“With it comes to licensing, there is enforcement involved too so the hours are unpredictable. But I am enjoying it,” he said.

This was also the third time Wong Nyok Hing received the award, after 2005 and 1997.

Her career with MPSJ started with the Petaling District Council in 1979, some 18 years before the MPSJ was established.

“I believe punctuality is among the good work ethics that helped me win this award,” the 53–year-old said.

Selangor State Secretary Datuk Ramli Mahmud, who presented the awards to the employees, hoped MPSJ would obtain five stars in the Housing and Local Government Ministry’s assessment.

“Besides achieving excellence, it is important for us to continue sustaining and improving excellence too,” he said.

MPSJ president Datuk Adnan Md Ikshan said the council has achieved 98.68% in its Annual Work Goals Achievement 2009.

“A total of 23 departments scored 100% while 13 others scored between 95% and 99%.

“There was only one department that scored below 95%,” he said.
