PJ Section 4 folk to send petition on leasehold issue

THE Petaling Jaya Section 4 Rukun Tetangga working committee will embark on a signature campaign on the leasehold title issue.

The campaign, held in conjunction with the annual Malam Muhibbah on Dec 15, aims to get the state and federal government to resolve the leasehold title issue of Section 4 residents.

During a meeting recently, committee chairman T. Chakaravarthi said they would be sending a memorandum to the state and federal government in January.

The members want the government to looked into the matter right from the start.

Chakaravarthi said residents were now faced with problems because some land lease titles were expiring in two to three years.

Consultant Wilfrid Patrick, 45, said the event would create an awareness for everyone involved.

He said people inheriting the property were unable to pay for the renewal of the lease.

“There isn’t a fixed way of handling the renewal of lease titles. What they were supposed to do should have been done long ago,” he said.

He added that they had found out that the land did not belong to the state to be given out at lease titles.

For software developer, Jason Ng, 36, the event will present a great platform for everyone to gather as one voice to resolve the matter.

“We do not know if they will give the freehold title but with the campaign we will able to gather feedback,” he said.

Petaling Jaya city councillor Mak Khuin Weng, who attended the meeting, said all the RT and residents associations should take up the issues themselves.

He believes a mistake has been made as Petaling Jaya residents should have been given the titles under the old law instead of the National Land Code.

“All the documents sourced from various sources including the national archives showed that the property should be freehold titles.

“So far the state government has not disputed the claims,” he said, adding the matter was not merely a legal problem.

Last month, StarMetro had featured about the drastic increase and discrepancies in premium that Petaling Jaya Old Town residents had to pay to renew their leasehold titles expiring in three to 15 years.

It has been reported that the Selangor government has been researching on the legal and historical aspects of land titles in Petaling Jaya and will announce a policy statement by the end of the year.

Mak will also be having a briefing on the issue on Dec 18 at the Section 4 RT centre, Jalan 4/47, Section 4, Petaling Jaya (opposite Campbell’s Soup factory).
