Tips for building your own home theatre

If you enjoy going to the movies but love the comfort of your home even more, a properly designed home theatre system may be the answer. A home theatre system is not just about plugging speakers into your television set. You can experience the Cineplex flare in your own living room while enhancing family’s time spent together. Check out these six important pointers to help you build your own out-of-this-world system.

#1: Start from scratch!
If you intend to build a home theatre, it is ideal to start planning before moving in. Determine early on where you want to lay down the cables as well as place the TV screen, speakers and controller units (i.e. DVD player, amplifier and processors). This can help to minimise any unnecessary rearrangements as (re)wiring could give you a massive headache!

#2: Space
A 100 squared metre room is sufficient to set up a home theatre. Ideally, it should be an enclosed area as it will limit any external interference. In addition, you can place acoustic shields around the walls to maximise the surround sound effect!

#3: Quality cables
Good quality wiring will contribute to quality sound. How is that so? Good cables are well protected and this curbs interference from speakers and the hi-fi. Bad cables produce an annoying buzz that will affect the whole performance of the home theatre system. In addition, fine-quality cables will minimise the need for maintenance. Since most people like to embed cables and wires into walls for a neater and more organised space, it is especially important to ensure its durability. You wouldn’t want to break into the walls just to fix a wire!

#4: Lighting
Instead of normal downlights, dimmers are preferred in a home theatre. ‘Use dimmers so that you can adjust the lighting according to the ambience you intend to create,’ suggests Danny Cheong, Director of Retail Operations from Bang & Olufsen (Malaysia).

#5: The screen
Yup, size does matter. The dimension of the TV screen has to correlate with the size and measurement of your home theatre space. An overly large screen in a small area will be damaging and uncomfortable to the eyes. Apart from that, it will also produce pixelated images.

#6: Location of speakers
Place the speakers so they are symmetrically aligned to each other for a maximum surround sound effect. Besides that, the speakers will have to be relatively near where you sit as this enhances its effects and allows you to be surrounded by the sound.
