Art Exhibition: The 2nd Seven Years

Malaysia’s emerging artist, Chang Yoong Chia, will be displaying new and old works at his most-awaited solo exhibition at The Central Market Annexe.

Entitled The 2nd Seven Years: Quilt of the Dead, Flora & Fauna IV, Narratives, the exhibition will display 40 of Chang’s signature paintings as well as the Quilt of the Dead. Created by Chang in 2003, the quilt uses death as a means for the living to “communicate” with each other.

The artist created the Flora & Fauna series in 2004 to display his memories, imagination and love for nature. Meanwhile Narratives, which was created in 2006, explores his concerns for culture and history.

Chang’s art includes embroidery on quilt, oil on canvases, charcoal on paper and oil on objects such as shells and ceramics. The artwork is an accumulation of the artist’s perspective and experiences while living in Germany, South Korea, Taiwan and Japan. It also displays his belief in art and what it can achieve.

Most of Chang’s work will be displayed for the first time at the exhibition. It reflects the artist’s preoccupation with the process of art-making and his concerns about the role and meaning of art. And what’s the story behind the peculiar title of the exhibition: The 2nd Seven Years? It represents the 2nd part of the artist’s career, which spans 7 years (from 2003 to 2009).

The 2nd Seven Years starts on Nov 19 at 8pm. It ends on Dec 16.

Apart from the exhibition, there will be talk sessions with Chang on Nov 28. These sessions are open to public and admission is free.
