Plastic Fantastic

The pioneer of Italian contemporary design, Kartell, is not a new name in the international furniture industry. Known for its unique, quirky and funky modern furniture made entirely out of plastic, Kartell has made itself a household name not only in interior design world but also Pop Art culture.

Kartell’s ultra-modern aesthetic is the key to transform a dull living space into a vibrant environment.

But beyond the flamboyant outlook, it is Kartell’s philosophy that distinguishes this company from many others in the market. Kartell adopted a very innovative approach since the very beginning to engineer products that are based on technological

research and design. With an aim to introduce plastic to home, Kartell consolidated its identity in the 60s during the international success of the era of talian design.

Having materialised solely recyclable plastic, Kartell continues to explore the versatility of plastic and redefine the shapes and functions of its own articles. Producing products made out of eco-friendly materials are not enough for Kartell. An established company, Kartell has also been consistently supporting studies regarding the use of plastic materials for household goods.

Standing for innovation and quality, Kartell has released many iconic numbers that have earned cult followings. Who can forget the legendary Philippe Starck’s Victoria Ghost Chair and Bubble Club sofa?

Adding to the list of innovation in design and technology this year, Kartell presents this year a unique range of chair by Japanese designer, Tokujin Yoshioka and a delightful selection of table lamp by Ferruccio Laviani.

Ami Ami
Ami Ami literally means weave in Japanese. Inspired by Japanese art of wrapping and weaving, designer Tokujin Yoshioka wanted to produce an innovative number which utilises polycarbonate. The catch of Ami Ami is the ground-breaking use of material for such intricate design – using a rather cutting edge material for a weaving technique is almost unheard of. But leave it to Kartell and Japanese meticulousness when it comes to invoking curiosity and surprise.

Admittedly, the Ami Ami chair is a result of Kartell’s extensive research and development in complex industrial processes. First presented to the general public at Salone del Mobile in 2008, Ami Ami is Yoshioka’s first collaboration with Kartell.

Ami Ami’s astonishing details include the simple squared off lines of the chair that provides a sharp contrast to the rich texture of the weave effect. The weave effect itself is a result of a complex industrial process compressed into a single mould texture.

The Ami Ami chair is available in two transparent finishes (clear and smoke) and three solid versions in red, black and white.

Cindy table lamp
The shoulder pads of the 80's may have made a big comeback in fashion, but in the world of interior design, it is the 70s we are celebrating. Case in point: the Cindy lamp. With its conical lampshade and rounded teardrop base, the Cindy Lamp has a silhouette of a typical 70s lamp.

It does not stop there; the Cindy Lamp has a fiesta of signature bold colour palette channelling the disco era of the 70s. Designer Ferruccio Laviani (of the fame baroque-styled Bourgie lamp) insists that Cindy Lamp is anything but dated. Although extremely representing a style celebrated almost four decades ago, the Cindy Lamp has a multitude of iridescent reflections when switched on, giving a refreshing modern twist to it. The funky selection is available in metallic tones of platinum, bronze, mint green, tangerine, ultramarine, flamingo, gun metal and violet.
