The Flexible & Durable Greenwood

“Even if you get bored with the colour scheme or design of your deck or wall, you can always change it," says Dr Paris Ng.

“It is the only one of its kind in the world today,” says Dr Paris Ng proudly.

Cheaper than regular wood, Greenwood is a wood composite that is fully recyclable. Even more interestingly, due to the combination of wood and polymers, the wood can be bent to create a curved appearance, making it more flexible than natural wood.

“Its low moisture absorption ranks first in the world as well,” adds Dr Ng, the man behind the research and development of the second generation wood composite.

It took four years to develop the wood composite from the existing first generation prototype to the opening of the first Greenwood show house in Kepong in 2008.

The Malaysian government has also taken an interest in them. “We are considering the government’s offer to sponsor the promotion of Greenwood overseas,” reveals Dr Ng.

House of Greenwood

The main Greenwood show house in Taman Bukit Maluri, Kepong exhibits what the wood is capable of as it is used for almost every structure of the house. The show house is open for viewing every Friday or by appointment only.

Greenwood is durable and hence is able to withstand the elements. Take for instance the house's wooden front gate, which looks spanking new. "That gate has been there for more than two years!" chuckles Dr Ng. "It looks so new because Greenwood has such a low moisture absorption level.”

Walk onto the patio, and you'll discover that it is made entirely from Greenwood - from the flooring to the diagonal wall panels. “You don’t ever have to worry about your patio rotting away” says Dr Ng. The material is weather resistant and because of that, the Greenwood blinds have been a hit with his customers as well.

“If you get bored with the colour scheme or design of your deck or wall, you can always change it,” he adds.

The ceiling showcases the wood's flexibility as it curves to give a unique wave-like effect. The feature wall is made using Greenwood to accentuate the entertainment area in a bold black colour. With this, the living room is in itself eye-catching.

The air well is transformed into a Jacuzzi area with Greenwood flooring and wall panels, while the back door opens onto a cosy Balinese-inspired deck using Greenwood.

The material is also suitable for wet kitchens as it is easy to clean and has fire retardant properties.

"You can mix and match the wood with mosaic and tiles as some of my customers have done," says Dr Ng.

The Greenwood show house is not only functional, but it is also aesthetically pleasing.

Many of Dr Ng's customers have taken advantage of the material's flexibility and durability. The Greenwood company has also bagged a number of prominent projects, including Park Royal Hotel, Oval Condominiums, Red Box, Petronas and even Desa Park City.
