Secure your home with the right lock

When selecting a lock, consider the type of object that
requires protecting.

TAKING a positive approach to home security is the first step in giving you and your family a safer and more secure home to live in. Remember, prevention is better than cure.

It is also worth taking a moment to get the facts right on some wellknown myths.

Myth
They will get in anyway.
Fact
It is a fact that most burglars are not highly skilled professionals and properly installed deadlocks on good quality exterior doors will prevent most burglaries.

Myth
Thieves carry skeleton keys which can open most locks.
Fact
Mathematically a 5-pin cylinder can have up to 100,000 combinations or different keys. This means the chances of having the same key, as your neighbour, is extremely low.

Myth
A lock is a lock.
Fact
Check that the lock you intend to purchase displays the standard and durability ratings.

When choosing security devices, it is crucial to make an informed purchase decision to get true value for your money.

Choosing the right lock
There are many applications around the house where locks are required but the same general rules apply to all when selecting a lock. Consider the following:

  • The type of structure or article that requires protecting, e.g. exterior doors, windows, garden shed, workshop, bicycle, toolbox, medicine cupboard, letterbox, gates, etc.
  • The value you place on the property to be protected. Your house, for example, would always be highly valued but a garden shed would be different.
  • The level of protection required whether basic, general or high. For example, a house or a workshop would require general or high protection depending on the area it is located (for the former) and the value of property contained (for the latter). Objects like bicycles or toolboxes would require basic to general protection depending on its value whereas minor entities like medicine cupboards and letter boxes would only need a barrier or deterrent.
  • Size and strength of structure or articles to which the lock is to be attached. For example, it is bad practice to fit a Grade “A” lock to a Grade “B” door as a final outcome will only give Grade “B” protection. You may need to upgrade the door before fitting a new lock.
  • Choosing a lock that is designed specifically for the job. Read the details on the lock packaging carefully to ensure that the lock you buy is recommended for your situation.
  • Choose locks that can be keyed alike to other locks in the house. Bored locks, padlocks, mortise locks, etc, can all be keyed to one key. This makes or easier escape should you find yourself in a dangerous situation such as a fire.
  • Talk to a security advisor to reduce the number of keys required for your property.
  • The styling and finish of the lock.
