RM885,000 spent to upgrade schools
THE state asssembly was told that about RM885,000 was spent to upgrade the infrastructure of schools for the benefit of children of estate workers in the state from January until June this year.
State executive councillor for Health, Estate Worker’s Affairs, Poverty Eradication and Caring Government, Dr Xavier Jayakumar said this included the upgrading works for 16 schools amounting to RM540,816, initiation of special educational programmes for UPSR students in 15 schools (RM112,572) and upgrading of computer laboratories and facilities in two schools (RM170,000). He said bus travel subsisidies for 524 students (RM215,980) was also given.
“Of the total number of students who have benefited from the bus travel subsidies, 298 were Indians, 171 were Malays, five Chinese and 50 from the orang asli community,” he said.
Dr Jayakumar (PR-Seri Andalas) was replying to a question by Khasim Abdul Aziz (BN-Lembah Jaya) who wanted to know about the allocation extended for the benefit of children of estate workers and to what extent the programme has benefited them.
“It is also registered that 45 percent of children in the estates did not attend nursery or kindergarten before entering primary schools,’’ said Jayakumar.
He said 12 new kindergartens would be built within Tamil schools this year while last year 15 were built in 10 Tamil schools.
He said the state government has also extended macro and micro credit facilities to estate workers who wanted to start their own businesses to supplement their income.
