RESIDENTS of Taman Melawati are advised to set up their own Voluntary Patrol Scheme (SRS) to help curb the rampant petty crime in their area.
Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Jalil Hassan said that a few areas in Ampang that had the scheme experienced zero crime.
“The areas include Bukit Antarabangsa, Taman Bukit Utama, Taman Putra and Taman Pertama. There are no crime reported in the areas since the setting up of the SRS,” he said.
ACP Abdul Jalil said that the residents would have to apply to the National Unity and Integration Department to start the scheme.
“Our officers will show the volunteers how to patrol and do a citizens arrest,” he added during a dialogue session with the residents organised by the Taman Melawati Residents Association.
He also said that the crime index in Taman Melawati is low when compared with other areas in Ampang such as Pandan Indah.
“Snatch theft is the most common crime here particularly near the commercial centre where there are a lot of banks. The one-way streets make it easy for the thief to follow their victims,” he said.
ACP Abdul Jalil said that the thieves commonly punctured the victim’s car tyres and he advised drivers to stop at a place where there are lots of people as well as to not open the car doors or windows when a stranger approaches.
“Another common modus operandi of these thieves are to target single women returning home between 7 and 7.30pm. They will wait until the victim exits the car to open the house gates before they strike,” ACP Abdul Jalil said.
He advised the public to watch out for suspicious characters lurking about.
ACP Abdul Jalil also said that there was not enough police personnel in Ampang but that it was also not a reason to not give the best service possible.
“The crime rate for Jan to May this year as compared to last year has dropped by 10%,” he added.
ACP Abdul Jalil said that he will let MPAJ know about the noisy futsal activity that goes on into the wee hours of the morning at a recreation club in the area.
“This comes under the local council’s authority. I’ll suggest setting a time limit for the activities,” ACP Abdul Jalil said.
Answering another complaint, Ampang Jaya head of crime investigations DSP Ang Ah Ban said that they had conducted several raids at the three premises where alleged illegal gambling takes place but have never found evidence.
“We have to operate within the framework of the law thus we need evidence before we can do anything,” he said.
DSP Ang also said that victims of snatch theft who made reports should receive a notice after that informing them of the status of the investigation.
“However, we too cannot pursue each case for long particularly when there isn’t much information.
“Also, the public should make police reports at the police station nearest to the location where the crime took place to avoid getting pushed about to several locations,” he said.
Peculiar activities within the Ampang area including strange cars parked in their neighbourhood or shady people lurking around can be reported directly to the Ampang Action Centre via its direct 24 hours hotline at 03-4252 4866.
