Residents: Repair riverbank before disaster strikes
 |
| All that remains: Residents say that a shortcut across the river was washed away recently. |
The bank of Sungai Samak near the Dahlia Apartments in Taman Tun Teja, Rawang, is being eroded causing fear among residents.
After a recent downpour, tree roots could be seen sticking out of the riverbank.
Taman Tun Teja Residents Committee deputy chairman Mohd Shafie Tasli said there were also a few houses near the riverbank that could collapse if the erosion was not prevented.
“Six months ago, the shortcut across the river from Taman Tun Perak to Taman Sri Bayu was washed away due to heavy rain.
“If this matter is left unattended, it can get serious,” he said.
Mohd Shafie said the residents feared that schoolchildren who walked or cycled to school were also at risk.
Taman Tun Teja low-cost apartment Phase One joint management body (JMB) chairman Mohd Rosli Ishak, 46, said there was an urgent need to prevent erosion of the riverbank.
“The river will become shallow due to soil deposits and eventually lead to floods downstream.
“We would also like to advise parents to prevent their children from playing near the riverbank,” he said.
He added that the matter was brought up to Rawang assemblyman Gan Pei Nei and also the Selayang Municipal Council and the Drainage and Irrigation Department.
Mohd Rosli also said there were people throwing rubbish and construction waste near the shortcut while Mohd Shafie hoped the MPS would look into the flood woes at Persiaran Tun Teja 3.
He added that the MPS Engineering Department employees had visited the site but nothing had been done.
“Whenever there is a downpour, there is silt and mud flowing down from the hill nearby.
“The clogged drains here are causng a major flood problem,” he said.
