Taman Orkid residents want TNB to stick to original plan
Several residents in Taman Orkid, Batu 9, Jalan Cheras, where Tenaga Nasional Bhd plans to erect a high tension transmission cable pylon held a peaceful protest on Thursday.
Led by Kajang municipal councillor Ng Tien Chee, the residents, numbering about 20, signed a petition letter addressed to Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim seeking his intervention in the matter.
“I hope the mentri besar will take up the matter with the Selangor Economic Action Council,” said Ng.
He said the residents were against the site for the pylon which would be about 50m from a row of shops in Taman Orkid.
He added that the new cables would be carrying 275kv compared with the existing ones which transmits only 33kv.
Top among their fears is the exposure to electromagnetic fields, which they said could lead to serious illnesses such as leukaemia and cancer.
They want TNB to revert to its original plan to locate the pylon in Cheras Hartamas.
“When the project was approved in 2007, TNB proposed to build the pylon in Cheras Hartamas but when the residents there protested they decided to use our backyard,” Ng said.
He also hit out at TNB for going ahead with the project without meeting the residents.
Ng said the proposed transmission cables in Cheras, from Taman Connaught to Taman Mahkota would be cutting through the Hulu Langat parliamentary constituency, Dusun Tua state constituency and three zones under MPK councillors.
“TNB only notified the Dusun Tua state assemblyman of a meeting,” he said.
TNB is now undertaking upgrading work to improve electricity supply by replacing its high tension cables capable of carrying up to 275kv under Section 13 of the Electricity Supply Act.
Police monitored the protest, including newly-appointed Batu 9 station chief inspector V. Kumaresan,
TNB officials were not available immediately for comment.
