Proper stalls for hawkers
Hawkers operating from pickups at the MBI Terrace in Ipoh will be a thing of the past soon.
The Ipoh City Council has embarked on a RM812,700 project to build permanent stalls at the hawker centre on Persiaran Tugu.
Datuk Bandar Datuk Roshidi Hashim said work began on Nov 29 last year and was expected to be completed on April 3 or earlier.
He said the hawkers there had been temporarily relocated to Persiaran Greentown 1 pending the completion of the project which would include piped water supply and a proper drainage system.
“We will also be setting up grease traps to minimise clogging of drains and problems of stench,” Roshidi said after visiting the work site on Tuesday.
He said as a safety precaution, the dining section would be moved closer to Dataran Ipoh.
“The new dining area will be sandwiched between Dataran Ipoh and the stalls.
“Diners will no longer run the risk of being knocked down by vehicles travelling along the road,” he said.
Roshidi said the council had decided to upgrade the hawker centre after taking into account factors of cleanliness and safety that were raised by the public.
He said the council would also be planting more trees and improve street lighting in the area.
He added that the number of stalls there would be increased from 14 to 17.
