A mess: The wall of the newly constructed drain collapsed a month after contractors completed the upgrading works for the drain in SS9A/7, Sungai Way, Petaling Jaya.

WHEN the drainage project in SS9A in Sungai Way, Petaling Jaya, was completed last month, residents thought their worries and fear of frequent flooding had come to an end.
However, what they did not expect to find out weeks later was to see the walls of the drain collapsing like domino blocks.
Seri Setia New Village chairman Ding Eow Chai said the drains were upgraded by the Federal Village Development and Security Committee (JKKKP) to prevent frequent flooding in the area.
“The whole structure just collapsed and you can see that it was badly constructed,” said Ding.
The collapsed wall was easily spotted at the end of SS9A/7, where the huge concrete blocks were still left lying in the drain.
Ding said he had no idea who the contractor was as there were no signboard put up to inform residents about the project
He said he did not know who to call when problems surfaced.
The project was also said to be illegal because approval was not obtained from the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and therefore its progress was not monitored by the local authority.
“If the project had met the required specifications, the drain would not have collapsed the way it did,” said Kampung Tunku assemblyman Lau Weng San.
Lau said he hoped the project’s contractor would rectify the problem.
