Two groups of residents at loggerheads over gated community issue

Locked up: The barricade has caused plenty of inconveniences for the residents.

THE act of a group of residents who put up an illegal barrier with the support of a security company in Taman Wangsa Permai (Phase 2), Kuala Lumpur, has angered some of the residents there.

The affected residents claimed the barrier between the roads — Jalan Wangsa 2/8 and 2/7 — was placed there by the group through an agreement with a security company.

Hu Yeoh Kee, 42, who lodged a police report on behalf of the residents, said the boom gate that was put up two weeks ago was always locked and prevented traffic from entering the housing area.

“The group claimed that since some of us here did not agree to the security service, we cannot come and go as we please. They decided to impose the service on us even though they did not get all the residents to agree on this matter,” said Hu at a protest held by the affected residents on Sunday.

He said the move was ridiculous as school buses were not able to pass through to pick up children while other vehicles were also not able to get across during emergencies.

“So now the schoolchildren have to walk out and wait by the roadside for their schoolbuses. This exposes the children to danger,” he said, adding that they did not even have a residents’ association.

Also present were Selayang municipal councillors Zul Nizam and Low Hock Seng.

Zul Nizam said the problem was an illegal gated community and MPS would take action by breaking the lock and removing the boom gate.

He said a gated community was a good idea but it could only be implemented with consent from a proper residents’ association.

“Everything was done here without getting consent from all the residents. To block a road is illegal.

“We will issue a notice to those who were responsible for the barrier. A warning notice will also be sent to the security company,” he said.

A check revealed that there is a Wangsa Permai Residents Association.

When contacted, its president, Sam Yap, said he was not aware of the issue involving the barricade or any claims of security fee payment.

“I am only aware of an automated barricade at the entrance to the residential area. I will have to check on this matter,” he said.
