DBKL allocates RM180,000 for repair work on two community halls

Rundown: The community hall in Taman Desa Aman is filled with debris.

AFTER more than 10 years of neglect, two community halls in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, are now being renovated and repaired with an allocation from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

The two community halls are in private flats in Taman Sri Bahtera and Taman Desa Aman.

Cheras MP Tan Kok Wai wrote to Kuala Lumpur mayor in April last year for both the halls to be repaired.

“The budget was approved in December last year. This is a special allocation which only the mayor can approve because the halls are considered private common facilities, which are not under the responsibility of the DBKL,” said Tan during a site to the two halls.

“I appreciate the mayor in granting allocations for these two halls.

“The developers had completed their term of maintenance so the halls were no longer their responsibility,” he said.

Tan also advised both the Joint Management Body chairmen of the halls to encourage residents to use the halls more often once repair work was completed.

“Senior citizens could use this place to relax, read newspapers, or you could organise some fundraising activities here,” he said.

He also told residents that the JMB might collect a small fee for use of the hall but it would be a reasonable amount.

The repair work on both the halls is RM180,000.

“I wish DBKL will approve more funds for urban renewal programmes, including upgrading old and dilapidated facilities,” said Tan.

He said DBKL did not carry out some development projects this year where budget was already allocated for last year.

“When I asked the mayor in July, we were given a statement saying there are 29 projects with an allocation of RM88.9mil, under the different DBKL departments.

“The statement said the projects were discontinued because there was no urgent need at this moment and they would not impact the public.

He added that the public were ratepayers who had the right to know and provide feedback while all MPs in Kuala Lumpur should also be part of the budget meeting as they were the ones who knew their constituencies best.
