MUSLIMS residents of AU3 Keramat, Kuala Lumpur, will have a more conducive environment to perform their prayers and hold religious activities now that their community surau has been fully upgraded.

Setiawangsa Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Zulhasnan Rafique, who opened the surau recently, hoped it would be fully used to strengthen the community as well as foster harmony among Muslims, especially during the holy month.

The surau, which has been renamed Al–Muqarrabin, underwent renovations to repair its old ceilings and pillars.

To inject life into these holy instititions, Zulhasnan said the Setiawangsa Mosque and Surau Consensus Council (Mapems) has lined up a series of religious activities to make the place more livelier.

“Six mosques and more than 50 surau in Setiawangsa will be collaborating with Mapems to carry out programmmes and activities for the people. We plan to make the surau more attractive for the community since it is also a place to acquire knowledge,” Zulhasnan said.

Apart from religious and educational activities, he said events lined up also include providing the poor with donations and basic necessities for the upcoming Hari Raya celebrations.

“We will extend aid to the poor, elderly, orphans, single mothers and the infirm tomorrow at PPR Seri Semarak,’’ he said, adding that everyone deserves to celebrate Hari Raya in a festive manner.

Meanwhile, Surau Al–Muqarra-bin chairman Mejar (B) Mohd Raup Atan said the surau was originally called Surau Kelumpur Camar and was too small to hold big events.

“Before this, we did not even have a surau in the neighbourhood and had to use a nearby community centre for prayers. Hence, we are grateful for this blessing,’’ he said.
