Public welcome to give ideas to beautify Lake Gardens
NATURE lovers brimming with ideas for the new and improved Lake Gardens can now send in their opinions and suggestions to the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
The 100-year-old park is undergoing major upgrading works with new features including a park for the visually impaired and man-made waterfalls.
Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuad Ismail said he welcomed ideas from the public, especially non-governmental bodies.
“If you have a tree and wish to put it here, give it to us and we will plant it for you,” he said.
Fuad said he had been receiving e-mail from the public with pictures of landscapes in other countries.
The upgrading works at the Lake Gardens, which will be called the Perdana Botanical Garden, are five months into the first phase of work, with an estimated cost of RM11 mil.
The entire project has three phases estimated to cost about RM35mil over a period of five years but Fuad hopes to complete the project within two years.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is scheduled to visit the park after the first phase is completed next month.
A total of 1,500 trees of various species have already been planted with monetary donations pouring in from the private sector.
Among the trees that can be seen in the 250 acres of land are Cannonball, Bottle Tree, Baobab, black bamboo, Moringa, Cycus and even a 100 year old Plumeria tree donated by a generous benefactor who wished to remain anonymous.
The DBKL is also rehabilitating trees infested with termites and parasites. As for the blind park, the team is still looking for plants and trees suitable to be touched and felt.
Phase 2 will be beneficial to children with a special playground featuring the famous Lat Kampung Boy series by Malaysian cartoonist Datuk Mohd Nor Khalid. Other features in phase two include a cafe, a tree house and a boathouse.
Phase 3 includes the upgrading of car park facilities, walkways and landscaping. Cars will no longer be allowed to drive into the park and are required to park at the entrance.
