More rubbish woes as MPSJ adds more garbage bins

In place: Since May, 13 bins were placed at specific spots of the commercial area in Pusat Bandar Puchong to tackle the garbage problem.

ALTHOUGH 13 communal rubbish bins are placed at 13 spots in Jalan Bandar 1 and 2 of Pusat Bandar Puchong, residents and traders are still throwing garbage in front of the shops and wlakways.

To end the decade-long problem the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) placed the bins at specific spots in May.

However, trader T. Pukalenthi said the situation in Jalan Bandar 1 did not improve.

“The TNB sub-station in front of my shop continues to be a favourite dumping ground although I have put up signs informing people not to throw rubbish here.

“I used to place bamboo baskets but they were taken away together with the rubbish as the collector said MPSJ did not allow such baskets. And seven of my plastic bins have been stolen,” he said.

He hoped MPSJ could provide more bins in the area — ideally one for each block.

Frustrated with the situation, Pukalenthi brought the matter up with MPSJ councillor Tan Jo Hann via several e-mails.

Tan, in reply said a plan was in the pipeline to increase the number of bins in the entire commercial area.

While appreciating Tan’s effort, Pukalenthi is unhappy with a particular reply from Tan’s assistant, Sharifah Rokiah Syed Harun.

“But I am not making noise unnecessarily. I am raising the issue for the sake of everyone in this area.

“Tan apologised on her behalf, but what’s important is there shouldn’t be any other complainants getting the same treatment as I did,” he said.

Tan said it was regretful that the incident happened.

“I wish to clarify that it does not represent our official views and it certainly does not reflect our response in dealing with complainants,” he said.

He added that five centralised bins would be added in the commercial area and two of it would be placed in Jalan Bandar 1 where the “favourite dumping grounds” are.

There are now three bins in Jalan Bandar 2 and one in Jalan Bandar 1.

“We have been constantly monitoring the situation for more than two years.

“While the residents are supposed to have their own bins in the first place, we introduced the centralised bin system to tackle the problem.

“I understand that some of them said the bins went missing, but there are traders who keep the bins within their premises every night to prevent them from being stolen,” he said.

Tan also noticed people’s habit of discarding bulk items near a food court.

“Alam Flora pick up the bulk rubbish twice a week. We have also been paying RM300 per trip to a contractor to clear the rubbish when we see the situation is out of hand,” he said.

He added that the council also told Alam Flora off whenever the waste was not collected on time.

“There has been a change of Alam Flora contractor in the past because of this,” he said.
