Danger zone: Yaw (left) and Ho standing in front of the broken retention wall in Salak Selatan

AN elderly couple living in Taman Salak Selatan in Kuala Lumpur are at their wits’ end over the constant flash floods occuring at their home.
However the situation got out of hand when a heavy downpour on June 2 destroyed their vegetable plot and caused their fish pond to overflow and their daily source of income to dry up.
“My wife and I earn a living by selling vegetables and fish at a nearby market and it keeps us going,’’ 82-year-old Ho Kon Thian said.
“Without the income we will not be able to make ends meet,’’ he added.
Ho’s wife Law Sin Ngow said that the damage from the recent downpour had caused them to lose some RM3,000 worth of income.
“The recent flood damaged our vegetable plot and the fresh water fishes we were harvesting were swept away when the water rose,’’ the 78-year-old Law said.
The couple, worried about their future livelihood, decided to seek help from the Federal Territory Gerakan Complaints Bureau recently, which then sent a team to visit the place on Tuesday.
After checking, they discovered that a broken retention wall near a monsoon drain nearby was the cause of the overflow.
“The moonson drain overflows every time there is a heavy rain and this causes the water to spill over to the fish pond,’’ complaints bureau chairman Eddie Yaw said.
“Now that we know what the problem is we will help write a letter to the Kuala Lumpur City Hall to help patch up the broken wall. This matter must be resolved quickly as this couple depend on their little fish pond and vegetable plot to make ends meet,’’ he said.
