Do more to protect the Earth, youths urged

YOUTHS today should be more aware of environmental issues plaguing the world, Leo Club District 308B2 (Selangor to Kedah) chairman Alan Thoo said.

He said in light of the recent earthquake tragedies that hit several countries over the past few months, the younger generation should do more to protect the environment.

“It is time we really did something for Mother Nature for we do not know what will happen tomorrow.

“If one person uses one fewer plastic bag a day, imagine the difference we can make in an entire year,” he said during the launching of the 40th year anniversary logo of the SMK Anderson Leo Club in Ipoh on Saturday.

Thoo noted that the club was adopting an eco-friendly approach in celebration of its 40th year.

“I hope all Leo Club members can help spread the word around on the importance of taking good care of our environment,” he added.

Actor Baki Zainal, co-founder of Malaysian Celebrities Go Green (MCG2), commended the club for taking the first step in promoting awareness on the environment.

“Anything that is 40 years old is hard to change but Andersonians have showed otherwise,” he said, adding that MCG2 would always support activities related to environment.

During the launch, the club also paid tribute to fellow club members Goh Yi Zhang, 15, Brandon Yeoh and Jason Ch’ng, both 17, who lost their lives during the dragon boat tragedy in Penang in January.

A video collection of them at charitable events was shown, drawing applause from the audience. Guests at the launch also observed a moment of silence as a mark of respect for the trio.

Also present at the launch was singer Azizi Zakaria as well as club members from schools in Perak, Selangor and Penang.
