Water rationing in Seremban

Valued help: Residents in Nilai getting water supply from SAINS lorries which make frequent rounds to the affected areas

WATER rationing has begun in the western part of Seremban due to the prolonged hot spell and shortage of rainfall in catchment areas.

The dry weather and lack of rain has resulted in a drop in water levels at the Pantai water treatment plant, Sg Ngoi-Ngoi and Sg Mahang which supplies water to Nilai and its surrounding areas, Sendayan and Lenggeng.

The affected areas, split into two zones, are at the end of the existing water distribution system which now has insufficient water pressure to reach consumers there.

Zone A includes Eka Matahari, Planter’s Haven, Taman Desa Ria, Nilai 3 and 7, Nilai Impian. Desa Cempaka/Jasmin, Kota Seriemas, Kuarters KLIA, Kolej Jururawat KPJ and Nilai Perdana which will receive water supply between 8pm to 8am.

Zone B includes Kondok, LB Johnson, Taman Gadong Jaya 1, 2 and 3, Seri Sendayan, Sendayan Indah, Felda Sendayan, Kg Gadong Jaya and Kg Jimah Baru which will have water supply from 8am to 8pm.

The rationing is expected to go on until water levels return to normal.

Syarikat Air Negri Sembilan (SAINS) corporate communications manager Azlan Abdul Aziz said efforts have been made to ensure residents got their suppy despite the rationing.

“The water treatment plant at Pantai is still operating below capacity, producing 9.5 million litres of water. On normal days, it can produce 16.5 million litres,” he said.

Azlan said apart from sending water in lorries, SAINS had also taken steps to replenish supply at the main tanks in the affected residential areas.

Speaking to reporters last week, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan urged households in the state, who are among the highest water consumers in the country, to reduce their water usage.

Per capita water consumption in the state was 239 litres, higher than the national average of 205 litres.

Mohamad said this was necessary as SAINS could not even supply enough water to households during the wet season.

He said the water shortage problem in the state would be resolved when the Triang dam was fully operational at the end of 2012.

Azlan said SAINS would be speeding up the laying of additional pipes from the Sg Terip water treatment plant to retention ponds in Mendom, one of the measures taken to overcome the water shortage problem.

“The new pipes will facilitate increased water supply to households in the affected areas.

“Meanwhile, we will be distributing water to residents in badly affected areas. Consumers are advised to save water and use it wisely throughout the rationing period,” he said.

For enquiries, consumers can contact the department’s toll-free line at 1-800-88-6982.
