Residents in Shah Alam will have to put up with the irregular garbage collection until March when new contractors will take over the service.
Shah Alam mayor Datuk Mohd Jaafar Mohd Atan said the tenders for new contracts would close on Jan 26 and the successful contractors would start work on March 1.
Jaafar said now the contractors who had been appointed on month-to-month basis were providing the service.
He said they would be continuing the service until the end of February.
“The temporary contractors are also free to submit their quotations.
“They will have the chance to land a contract if their quotations are competitive,’’ he said
Jaafar said there had been an improvement in the overall garbage collection service in the city in recent weeks.
Initially, he said, the newly-appointed contractors had difficulty finding the routes and it caused some problem.
“Now, the service has improved as the contractors are more familiar with their areas,’’ he said.
Jaafar said the threat the new contractors faced earlier from the previous ones who were unhappy with the month-to-month contract had been resolved.
StarMetro reported recently that disgruntled contractors were taking the law into their own hands and thus causing a big headache for the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA).
Jaafar also held a meeting recently with the garden waste contractors to remind them that their job also involved collecting bulk waste such as old furniture, mattresses, chairs and tables.
“During this festive period a lot of residents take time to clean their homes and thus such waste will increase,” he said.
The council has 99 contractors and an additional 59 will be roped in to cut the grass, clean the roads, drains and collect bulk and garden waste.
