BARISAN Nasional leaders have demanded that the state government open up the Penang Hill multi-storey car park as soon as possible to solve the traffic congestion problem in the area.
Bukit Bendera Barisan Nasional co-ordinator Hng Chee Wey said he had received numerous complaints from the residents on insufficient parking lots since the opening of upgraded Penang Hill funicular train in April.
“Tourists are forced to park their cars at the entrance of the flats, and in turn, this has caused traffic congestion in the area.
“The Penang Development Corporation (PDC), which built the car park, should explain why the building has yet to obtain an Occupational Certificate (OC) from the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP),” he told a press conference recently.
The four-storey building costing RM5mil has 120 parking lots on three levels while the ground floor is for buses.
Hng added that many tourists and residents were forced to park their cars illegally along the road and summonses were often issued by the police.
Bukit Bendera MCA division chief Tang Heap Seng, who was also present, said he was disappointed as there were no facilities such as lifts or escalators for the disabled.
“The car park is also not well-designed as the corners to turn are too narrow and the beam at the entrance is too low for four-wheel drives.”
PDC general manager Datuk Rosli Jaafar when contacted said he would take the necessary measures to solve the problem.
