PPR residents urged to be active
JOHOR BARU: More than 90% of the people’s housing projects (PPR) nationwide do not have an effective residents’ committee, resulting in problems with regards to cleanliness, health and other issues.
“PPR residents must change their mindset and attitude to be responsible for the entire building and not just their unit alone,” Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung said.
He urged them to be active in the residents’ committees to resolve problems instead of always bringing up the issues to the local authorities.
“We discovered that many PPR residents were not interested in becoming committee members,” he said after opening the new office building of Melati Ehsan Development Sdn Bhd here yesterday.
He added that the ministry was looking into the idea of getting residents to sign an agreement to take care of their own buildings, suggesting that PPR residents could fork out RM10 or RM20 a month towards a maintenance fund instead of relying on local authorities.
“Unfortunately, many PPR residents believe it is the responsibility of the authorities to fix their problems,” he said, adding that the problems included matters of cleanliness, maintenance and security.
