A victim of vandals
Vandalism rears its ugly head at newly completed complex

NIBONG TEBAL: Vandals have struck at the recently completed RM300,000 Old Market Road Jetty complex that fronts the picturesque Sungai Krian here.

The window panel of an unoccupied office unit in the double-storey complex had been smashed while four of the six concrete benches there were broken.

Nibong Tebal MCA division chief Tan Cheng Liang said Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen had been slated to open the complex, which was completed three weeks ago, sometime next month.

“A few local residents informed me of the vandalism on Tuesday

“They believe a fierce fight had taken place there after they found bloodstains and a liquor bottle on the ground,” she said after inspecting the complex yesterday.

Tan, who is South Seberang Prai Eco-Tourism Development Council chairman, said the Tourism Ministry funded the complex through the Federal Government’s Implementation and Co-ordination Unit (ICU).

She said it was “highly disappointing” to find vandals destroying public property and wasting taxpayers’ money.

Tan said she would appeal to the ICU for emergency funds to repair or replace the damaged items and to put up a fence for the building.

She said she would also request the police to conduct frequent patrols in the area.

“Before the March 2008 general election, I got the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) to build a RM200,000 walkway connecting this Old Market Jetty complex to Kampung Sanglang.

“However, I hope the Tourism Ministry will allocate an additional RM500,000 for this walkway to be extended to Ampang Jajar via the Sri Sanglang Recreation Park in the area,” she said.

Tan said Sungai Krian was fast becoming a popular tourist destina- tion for its fireflies, and baby octopus fishing.

She said many tourists also enjoyed visiting the caged fish breeding farms in Sungai Udang.
