16 areas to have CCTVs and loudspeakers

MUAR: Sixteen ‘hotspots’ here in town here will soon be equipped with CCTV cameras and loud speakers to monitor crime, immoral activities, illegal motor races and even littering.

Muar municipal council’s newly appointed president Muhammad Fuad Radzuan said some of the spots are known hotspots for crime while the others were earmarked for security purposes.

He said the camera project was allocated by the Housing and Local Government Ministry while the police selected the spot for the cameras.

“The cameras will be managed and maintained by GTC Global at the cost of RM1.9mil for six years.

“However, the police and the council will jointly monitor the images captured by the cameras,” he said after his first chairing of the council’s full-board meeting here.

Muhammad Fuad said the company would hand over the project to the council on Sept 30 but they hoped for the operations to begin before Hari Raya Puasa.

He said besides recording criminal activities, the cameras would also pick on litter-bugs where an officer’s voice would be blared out from the loud speakers to tick off the culprits.

He said the voice would also instruct litterbugs to pick up ubbish they threw in the town and those who refused to do so would be compounded RM250.

Muhammad Fuad said the council would set up its operation centre at the Muar Diamond Jubilee Hall while the police as its headquarters along Jalan Mariam.

To a question from reporters, he said the cameras can be rotated 360 degrees and has the capability to zoom out and capture images as far as 200m from their posts.

The CCTV spots are at Jalan Mariam near the Muar police station, Jalan Petri, the junctions of Jalan Abdullah - Jalan Bentayan, Jalan Abdullah - Jalan Sulaiman, Jalan Sulaiman near CIMB Bank and along Jalan Ali near Classic Hotel.

Other camera locations are at the Muar bus terminal, Diamond Jubilee Hall parking lots, Tabung Haji Building, Jalan Arab - Jalan Daud junction, near the Jalan Arab Public Bank building, near the Bentayan hawker centre, Tanjung Emas, near Laman Maharani and at the Jalan Sungai Abong - Jalan Haji Abdullah junction.

Muhammd Fuad said the hotspots were given by the police to curb crime, especially snatch and motorcycle thefts, robbery, immoral activities and even illegal motorcycle races.

“We hope the CCTV project will not only help reduce crime in the town, it will also stop people from littering.

“As the new president I ask all residents and the media to give their fullest cooperation in our effort to make the town safer and cleaner,” he added.
