Exco: Iron ore project in Perak is safe
IPOH: The state government would not have approved the proposed iron ore distribution centre project in Teluk Rubiah, Lumut, if it is damaging to the environment, said state senior exco Datuk Hamid Osman.
“The local community in Teluk Rubiah need not worry about the plan by the Brazilian mining company, Vale SA, to set up an iron ore distribution centre there.”
Vale is the second largest diversified metals and mining company in the world.
It was reported that the proposed project in Teluk Rubiah would involve US$900mil (RM3bil) in capital expenditure for the first phase alone.
In a press conference earlier, Perak Environmental Association urged the state government to reconsider its approval to Vale to set up its distribution centre in the area.
Its president Abdul Rahman Said Alli said the government should consider the views and objections raised by various stakeholders on the proposed project.
He expressed fear that the proposed project would damage the aquatic life and coastal marine resources including coral reefs at Pulau Katak, fronting the project site.
