Fire safety plans for Jonker Walk
MALACCA: A special committee will be formed to review fire safety measures to protect heritage and historical buildings in Malacca’s well-known Jonker Walk area following a recent fire that damaged a shophouse there.
Jonker Walk Committee deputy chairman Datuk Gan Tian Loo said about 100 pre-war and 19th-century Dutch buildings were located in the area, which is also a tourist hub.
Gan also said that a fire drill would be conducted soon to better prepare building and business owners, as well as occupants of homes in the area, for emergencies.
“The fire drill is important as Jonker Walk is a busy tourist spot, especially during weekends when the street is closed to traffic and turned into a pedestrian mall,” he said after visiting the scene of the fire here yesterday.
He also said that all relevant authorities such as the Malacca Historic City Council, the Malacca Museums Corporation, Tenaga Nasional Berhad and the Fire and Rescue Department would be called in for a meeting to form the special committee.
