Fishermen to get jetty closer to their villages

KUCHING: Fishermen at Telaga Air will have a new and improved jetty that’s closer to their villages once funds are approved.

Padawan Municipal Council secretary Michael Saweng said until then these fishermen would have to operate from their old jetties.

“We had a dialogue session with them recently and it was chaired by Pantai Damai assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi,” he told a press conference after a full council meeting here yesterday.

The dialogue session was held after fishermen voiced their unhappiness over the construction of an esplanade at Telaga Air. The construction required the old jetties to be relocated. Although the Land Custody and Development Authority had built a new one for them, the fishermen claimed it was just too far away which was an inconvenience.

Upset, folks there even erected a signboard along one of the jetties reminding the authorities of the Prime Minister’s “People First, Performance Now”.
