Covered walkway causing misery to shop owner
JOHOR BARU: The Johor Baru City Council’s decision to cover a walkway is causing misery to the owner of a Bollywood fashion house.
George Carkoo, 40, said every time it rained, excess water from the awning flowed into his shop on Jalan Segget.
He said his business had suffered for more than a month now since the council put up the awning.
“The city council said the awning would be useful for traders but they have yet to start business,” he said.
Although the covered walkway was constructed five months ago, Carkoo never faced problems until one month ago due to the dry spell in Johor.
“It is clear that the awning has caused more damage,” he claimed.
Carkoo said that water would reach above ankle-level during heavy rain and as a result, his business showed a 40% decline.
“I have to move some of my costumes and wall displays because they would be soaked.
“I also had to change the light bulbs and fans,” he said.
Carkoo has since lodged a complaint with the city council but until now, no action has been taken.
“The walls have water patches and there are cracks at the shop and it will cost about RM15,000 to get it fixed. I hope the city council can compensate for my losses and bring down the awning as it serves no purpose,” he said.
The city council’s public relations officer Lokman Sulaiman said they would look into the matter as soon as possible.
“We apologise for any inconvenience suffered by the shop owner,” he said.
