Council seeks funds for CCTV installation
KUCHING: Kuching City South Council (MBKS) is appealing to the Federal Government to approve its application for a grant to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at all crime-prone areas as soon as possible.
Mayor James Chan said MBKS had submitted an application for RM2.5mil to the Housing and Local Government Ministry two years ago but there was still no reply.
“We re-applied for it recently and we hope the grant will be given as soon as possible so that it can be implemented,” he said after chairing an MBKS full council meeting here yesterday.
Chan said MBKS had identified 14 locations as crime-prone areas based on the recommendations by the police and the installation of CCTV cameras there should not be delayed.
Among them are the Golden Triangle area in the heart of the city, Song Thian Cheok Road, the Hong and Shanghai Bank area, Tabuan Jaya Commercial area and the Twin Tower area at Mile 3.
“At the moment, none of the areas have CCTV cameras. Help us in this matter because it is also in line with the nationwide safe city programme. Crime is still happening,” he said.
“This (CCTV) is not so much for the council per se but for the security and safety of the city and the people at large,” he added.
