Drastic 30% drop in KL crime rate
KUALA LUMPUR: The crime rate in the city has dropped by 30% in the first two months of the year, thanks to increased police presence in crime hotspots.
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wira Abu Seman Yusof said there was also a drastic fall in the number of street crimes, with January recording a massive drop of 44.6% and February 40.8%.
“The drastic drop can be attributed to the increased police presence, better co-ordination and strategies in combating crime especially with the introduction of crime hotspots which have enabled us to better focus our manpower.
“This will only spur us to work harder to achieve the Home Ministry’s NKRA (National Key Result Areas) that is to reduce the crime index by 5% and street crimes by 20% nationwide by the end of this year,” Abu Seman told reporters after going on a walkabout yesterday at the Metro Prima in Kepong, which has been identified as a crime hotspot.
He said 19 government-linked companies (GLC), statutory bodies and local councils in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Pulau Pinang, Johor and another 415 auxiliary policemen will be roped in to assist in crime prevention rounds.
Also present were city police chief Datuk Wira Muhammad Sabtu Osman and Sentul OCPD Asst Comm Zakaria Pagan.
