Guan Eng stands by theme park decision
GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has defended the state’s decision to approve a theme park in Teluk Bahang despite fierce criticism from Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM).
SAM president S.M. Mohd Idris had reportedly described the proposed project as having the potential to endanger the island’s ecology.
Lim stressed the park was no threat to the environment although the project – called the Escape Theme Park Resort – is said to be located near a forest reserve, the Teluk Bahang Dam and the Penang state park.
“We had discussed things with Idris, and he understands our reasoning. We usually have closed-door meetings with the non-governmental organisations,” Lim told a press conference here yesterday.
Lim said the RM180mil park project would be on scrubland.
He added that environmentalists who had raised concerns about the project had been briefed.
The project, started on Oct 18, will take around six years for the completion of three phases.
On another matter, Lim said Penang planned to have bicycle lanes on the island and mainland by 2016.
The lanes would be divided into three categories totalling some 180km.
