Tang: Halted project led to landslip

Scary sight: Tang and his team have a closer look at the collapsed portion of the road.

THE landslip along Jalan Rawang-Serendah in Rawang has become a cause of concern for road users and the owners and customers of Jaya Cash & Carry, which is near the collapse.
The gap, which is about six meters deep, is the result of a landslip due to a series of heavy downpours in September last year.
However, remedial works were not carried out and erosion has led to a bigger problem as the sinkhole is eating into the main road.
Jaya Cash & Carry manager Tan Kwong Wah, 51, said the erosion was worrying as the store is located next to the gaping hole.
He said complaints had been lodged with various authorities including the Public Works Department (JKR), the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID), Syabas and even Tenaga Nasional.
However, he said no action had been taken to rectify the situation though JKR officers had visited the site and taken photographs.
“We are worried the erosion may eat into the land where our building is located. We are not sure if our building is safe any more.
“We hope something can be done to correct the problem,” he said during a visit to the site with Selayang MCA chairman Datuk Tang See Hang.
Tang said the drainage in the area was the main issue as a drainage upgrading project designed to curb flood problems had been halted after the 2008 election.
He added that the halted project, which kicked off in 2007, would have ensure there was sufficient outflow to control floods.
“The erosion was probably caused by the current drainage system, which could not cater to the heavy water flow during the rainy season.
“We cannot neglect the problem as the condition will only worsen, so temporary measures are being taken by JKR to stabilise the eroded site while a budget is being discussed for the complete work,” he said.
