Fine weather improves Pantu flood situation

KUCHING: The flood situation at Pantu in Sri Aman district near here has improved following fine weather, with only 16 people of eight families from Kampung Pangkalan Pantu still sheltered at a relief centre.

A state flood operations room spokesman said that eight families had been allowed to return to their homes on Saturday.

“The weather has been fine since this morning and flood waters are receding.

“At present, the access road to Pantu is under half a feet of water.

“We hope the fine weather will continue,” she said on Saturday.

On Wednesday, 139 villagers from Kampung Pangkalan Pantu were forced to evacuate from their longhouse to the flood evacuation centre at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Chung Hua Pantu after the village became inundated.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Red Crescent Society’s Sri Aman branch has been distributing aid, including cooking untensils and blankets, to flood victims at Kampung Pangkalan Pantu from Thursday night. — Bernama
