Bicycles lanes for a greener city
JOHOR BARU: In an effort to lessen carbon-emission and promote a greener lifestyle, the Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) is planning to create a bicycle lane in the city.
Mayor Mohd Jaffar Awang said that the council would identify certain stretch in the city that are suitable for such lanes.
“To make effective bicycle lanes, the roads have to be level but the roads in the city are sloped, which makes it difficult for bicyclists to pedal uphill.
“But we will not make that an excuse and will suggest to developers of new housing areas to include bicycle lanes in their projects,” he said.
Jaafar hoped that by promoting a cycling lifestyle, more people would opt to use an environmentally-friendly means of transportation.
“Bicycle or pedestrian lanes can lessen the use of motorised vehicles that emits hazardous gases which contributes to global warming.
“Riding bicycles will benefit the environment and save space for parking,” he said.
Council staff that are living near their workplace, added Jaafar, are encouraged to cycle to work.
He commented on this at the launch of ‘Global Warming, Act Now’ carnival organised by the Johor department of environment and the council here recently.
In relation to the event, state DOE director Dr Zulkifli Abdul Rahman said the programme goal was to raise awareness and act as a platform for the department to play their part in saving the earth.
“The programme also reaches out to the community to be more aware the environment through hands-on activities such as exhibitions, quizzes and organic fertilizer composting demonstrations,” he added.
