Pulau Sipadan chalet razed in fire
KOTA KINABALU: A 10-room chalet at a popular resort on Pulau Mabul that fronts the diving haven of Pulau Sipadan was razed in a fire.
No one was hurt in the 7.30pm fire on Saturday as most of the 24 foreign and local guests were having dinner when the fire broke out.
Semporna district police chief Deputy Supt Mohd Azim Khan Abdullah said yesterday that the fire, the first of its kind on the island, was believed to have started from a short-circuit.
He said resort’s staff and General Operations Force personnel based at the island helped put out the fire in about an hour.
A spokesman of the resort said they had yet to estimate the total losses but was grateful that there were no casualties.
“We are very thankful that every one of our guests are safe,” he said.
Since the closure of resorts on Sipadan, most resorts and dive operators have set up their base in Pulau Mabul.
