Modern Curtains For Raya
Curtains do magic when it comes to home makeover. While new furniture could break your budget and repainting the walls may require too much hassle, replacing curtains to set the Hari Raya mood is the easiest way out.
But choosing the right curtain for Hari Raya can be perplexing, especially for the minimalist style enthusiasts.
31-year-old Anita Adnan, a housewife, confesses that most curtain fabrics offered in the market during the Raya season consist of the obligatory festive colours like green, fuchsia, baby blue or maroon.
“Certainly there are more choices that would suit my modern house,” she says, “But I am not sure whether my house would look too dull for Raya if I were to decorate it with simple curtains.”
Anita is not the only one having problems finding the right curtain for her house. Another housewife, Aisyah Ali, admits to having a similar problem.
“Beautiful and intricate details such as embroideries and glittering threads are everywhere during the Raya season. Unfortunately, such details often result in an unflattering setting when put together with modern furniture,” says the 26-year-old housewife.
StarProperty talks to the Creative Director of Baagus Curtain, Christy Wong, to overcome this dilemma. According to Christy, there are ways to go about decorating minimalist house with beautiful curtains without looking to plain for Raya.
The Key Point: Harmony
New set of curtain always on the top list of Hari Raya must-haves. The obligatory Hari Raya curtains have traditionally favoured the use of bright colours and trendy accessories to generate a cozy and harmonious mood. But make sure the colour theme for your window dressing is corresponding with the colour of your furniture, wall and carpet.
The real problem here, as enthused by Anita and Aisyah, is finding the balance between the festive Raya colours and their contemporary houses.
“Baagus Curtain, with outlets in densed urban pockets such as Wangsa Maju, Puchong, Shah Alam, Kota Damansara and Kepong, understands the difficulties many homeowners face these days when it comes to decorating their houses during the festive season like Raya,” says Christy Wong.
According to Wong, there are a few things homeowners need to remember if they were to decorate their houses minimally during Raya: use a single colour or pattern fabric for window dressing, pay particular attention to colours and always go for elegance.
“You want to create harmony in design concept and a sense of joy to your home,” Wong says.
“The focal point of minimalist aesthetic is elegance,” she says, “And elegance comes with subdued colours. Opt for less complicated look and lighter fabric.”
How to Pull Off The Raya Look
Yes, some may find contemporary curtains simply too plain for Hari Raya. But this is when colours and pattern come into play. “Earth tones such as brown and khaki are great choices to create peaceful, serene and warm mood,” says Wong. Silver material is also suitable for minimalist houses and apartments. Pair it with less shimmering furniture such as black velvet or grey carpets to achieve that modern look. Add some light fabrics with Islamic decorative patterns as roman blinds to complete the Hari Raya look. As for design, Wong recommends ring tape curtain, double pinch pleat and roman blinds for a contemporary Hari Raya look. “These three designs not only look good on contemporary houses, but also very easy to maintain,” says Wong.
